Norway advances to face Germany in Semifinal
Sweden was dangerous throughout the game, especially on cornerkicks, but Norway played solid on defense, with a stellar goalkeepr, and when they had they ball they were always looking to get forward quickly on the counterattack. Their speed and combination play going forward was too much for Sweden, when in the 39th minute, left midfielder Lene Storløkken (#21) sent a leading ball down to the left of goal for her forward, Elise Thorsnes (#16), who took a well-placed shot that an off-balance Swedish defender could not clear cleanly, instead deflecting it into the net for the opening goal. Not easing up with the lead, six minutes later center back Trine Rønning (#7) sent in a long, high freekick towards the Swedish penalty area, which was poorly played by the Swedish defense, and fell to Anneli Giske (#5) in front of the goal, who put it into the back of the net.
Sweden piled on the pressure in the second half, making substitutions at halftime that looked to make a difference. But Norway’s breakaway speed and skill saw them increase their lead when Cecilie Pedersen (#22), who had just come into the game, got behind the Swedish defense and easily beat their keeper to take a 3-0 lead. Sweden never gave up, and managed a late consolation goal in the 80th minute, but the result was already sealed, sending Norway on to the Semi-Final match against Germany on Monday, September 7.
