On behalf of all women playing soccer, former EBSC player Heather O’Reilly received the 2008 FIFA Presidential Award at the FIFA World Player Gala in Zurich on January 12, 2009.
Said FIFA President Sepp Blatter, "Whether in terms of technique, physical fitness or tactics, women’s football is experiencing continuous development around the world. We are also thrilled by the growing popularity of the sport. Today, some 26 million girls and women play the beautiful game in all of FIFA’s 208 member associations and the sport is continuously attracting more and more young female athletes."
A player from the United States was chosen to accept the award due to this country’s overwhelming success in 2008, and its general leadership in advancing the sport among women and girls.
